September is Spinal Cord Awareness Month!

Circulatory issues are common among those with spinal cord injuries. According to, “when the spine is injured, the spine loses the ability to communicate effectively with the brain, which in turn controls cardiac nerves and affects the flow of oxygenated blood to the rest of the body.”

Spinal cord injuries usually can also result in low blood pressure, abnormal heart rate, rises in blood pressure and blood clots.

In the US, over 1, 275,000 people suffer from spinal cord injuries, with 12,000 new cases occurring each year. Men account for nearly 82% of SCI patients.
