1.) Rest: According to experts, since plantar fasciitis is associated with strain, one of the best ways to alleviate symptoms is to rest. “In one study mentioned by the American Academy of Family Physicians, 25 percent of patients with plantar fasciitis indicated that rest was the most effective treatment.”

2.) Ice: Since plantar fasciitis is associated with inflammation of the fascia of the foot, ice and anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) can be extremely effective.

3.) It’s all about the footwear: People with plantar fasciitis need extra support. Experts say that one of the ways to get plantar fasciitis is due to lack of support in footwear and as well as overuse injuries of the feet. Arch support and heel cups are recommended.

4.) Stretch: Stretching the toes, arches and calves is a great way to stretch the fascia of the foot.  The idea is to lengthen the ligament and strengthen the muscles around the arch.

5.) Consider night splints: Since feet are in a plantar-flexed position when a person sleeps, night splints can help take pressure off of the foot by keeping them at a neutral 90-degree angle and prevent shortening of the fascia.

6.) Physical Therapy: Physical therapy is a great way to properly learn how to stretch the fascia and Achilles tendon, as well as, strengthen the muscles in the lower leg. In addition, athletic tape can provide relief by offloading the fascia and supporting the foot.
